This is William Skene's anthology of dark-age Welsh Bardic poetry. Often cited, but difficult to obtain, this book contains every remaining piece of Bardic poetry known. The poems are translated from four manuscripts the Black Book of Caermarthen, the Red Book of Hergest (which is also the source of the Mabinogion), the Book of Taliessin and the Book of Aneurin, all of which date from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries C.E. The poems themselves date from much earlier, probably from the sixth century by internal evidence. This corpus is one of the treasures of world literature. It is also the only true source material for the study of Bardic lore, which reputedly preserved the esoteric (and long-lost) beliefs of the Druids. The poems are infused throughout with mystic clarity, strange flashes of wisdom, and insight into humanity and nature.

First Rate Publishers OCRed this out of print book and couldn't be bothered to go through it and make it nice. considering what they charged for this book, that is shameful. it's shameful that these POD publishers still use the OCR method to reproduce these old books. the book was so shoddily done, with random punctuation where none was needed or should've been; new paragraphs starting in the middle of sentences; misinterpreted text resulting in misspelled words or words used out of context; and some text missing where it would appear tables should've been. the latter i can't be sure of, since i do not own, nor could i find, an original copy of the book.having said that, it is really hard to find an english translation of these poems. i see now that what i consider a better POD publisher is selling this title, i may give their copy a try.
still, to use OCR and not have the decency to proofread is just shameful.
EDITED: i have now ordered the Forgotten Books version of this, hoping it would be better done. while it seems that the errors (one of which were important linguistic tables being left out completely) from the First Rate Publishers' version are gone, the footnotes that were included in the FRP version are not included in the FB version. seriously????????? i can't see how OCRing something is cheaper OR easier than just scanning these old books as is and printing them. maybe i'm missing something.

The Four Ancient Books of Wales edition by William F Skene Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I truly love the background presented in the beginning of this book. William F. Skene really goes in depth in explaining where and who these texts come from, and who has handled them up to his work. Be ready for a decent amount of Latin and French phrases though, this is from the classic approach to scholarship. He obviously expects his readership to be fluent in both.
While the Poetry and writings of the actual Ancient Books of Wales are an incredible spring of beauty, knowledge, and illumination, the introductory notes of one of the translators consumes a solid third of this book's heft. The notes provide great background for the Books, but is a bit of a dry read.
The contents are as described. However the printing looks like it is a poor photocopy of the original with large text and a poor quality font. This detracts from the overall quality of the book and is not worthy of the content.
This book was very poorly produced. I had to return it because it was basically unreadable. It is an OCR image-to-text book that, most likely, has not been edited by a human. The text is printed in an ugly non-standard font, and the page numbers have weird computer icons by them.
Anyway here's a digital facsimile version that you can download for free in PDF, , plain text https//archive.org/details/fourancientbooks01skenuoft
I was looking forward to reading the poetry and attempting to better understand the people, but the intro alone killed that desire. Maybe I didn't understand what I was getting, but it seems like someone decided to publish their thesis and didn't adjust it for a wider audience.
When one considers just how many contemporary stories and songs have borrowed from the themes present in this compendium of bardic poems, it becomes clear just how significant the work is. I have heard many criticisms of the translations by Skene, but nevertheless I find the work to have a genuine and fresh perspective. The Four Ancient Books of Wales are mesmerizing and beautifully penned.
Well put together.
I highly recommend that anyone who gets this book should also get the book ARTHURIAN LOCALITIES, which is a very important 19th century examination of this book.
